Our Top 10 Reasons for building a career in the hospitality industry

There are many reasons why the restaurant business is a great sector to develop a career in. Here are our top ten:

1.     There are lots of promotional opportunities

The restaurant sector is growing massively in the UK and it is set to be back on track completely post Covid by 2024. There are over 36,000 restaurants in the UK which means there are a lot of opportunities available to you. So if you are ambitious, don’t want to stay still for long then then hospitality might just be for you.

2.     No formal qualifications needed to get started

Unlike other career options, you don’t need specific qualifications to get started in the industry. Instead, skills such as enthusiasm, commitment and friendliness win out.

3.     It’s fun

Working in the restaurant business is a lot of fun. You will be active, working with people, both other team members and of course the public, and because people want to enjoy their meal out, it is a much more fun atmosphere to work in than sitting behind a desk from 9 – 5.

4.     Acquire a varied skill set

One day is rarely the same in the restaurant business. Working in the industry means you learn a range of tasks from marketing to customer service to finance to PR, nutrition and more.

5.     Great Camaraderie

The restaurant business is very sociable. You work as a team and you will make friends for life – we guarantee!

6.     It’s Flexible

The other side of working evenings and weekends is that you can enjoy where you live on your days off when others are at work. So, if you really wanted to visit that exhibition or go on that trip but couldn’t ever get tickets before, now you can enjoy them all, and without the crowds.

7.     It’s rarely boring

Working in a restaurant is busy and buzzy. You will be kept engaged and motivated with all the goings on and you won’t have time to even consider getting bored.

8.     Learn about food and drink

What can be better than learning about the wonderful world of food and drink? You never know, the knowledge you acquire might prompt you to set up your own restaurant business?

9.     You get an insight into a range of amazing cultures

Both from the staff you work with and the customers you meet, your horizons will be expanded by all the amazing people you meet.

10.  Develop lots of transferable skills

Many of the skills you will learn are easily transferable. So, if you ever decide to move into another field, many of the skills you have honed will be relevant for lots of other sectors too (ref our point about marketing, PR, finance etc!)
